It’s All About Me!

Musician, entertainer, radio host and all-around good guy John Pizzarelli

I don’t like blowing my own horn, but I can’t resist sharing two things with you. First, I’m the guest on this week’s edition of Radio Deluxe, the radio show hosted by John Pizzarelli and his wife Jessica Molaskey. John is one of the most talented guitarists on the planet, and a great all-around entertainer; Jessica is a theater-trained singer with impeccable taste. Somehow in the midst of their busy touring schedule they find time to host a lively (and very funny) two-hour radio show that celebrates the Great American Songbook, features the new generation of cabaret performers, and welcomes music-minded guests of all kinds. I was delighted to sit in and bring along some of my favorite arcane jazz and pop tracks—with and without movie connections—featuring Cliff “Ukulele Ike” Edwards, Mel Blanc, Jack Teagarden and a host of others. You can download a podcast at http://www.johnpizzarelli.com/go.php?page=radiodeluxe_listen, and learn more about the show and where it airs near you by going to the home page at www.johnpizzarelli.com and clicking on Radio Deluxe.

Last weekend I was flattered to receive the first-ever Heritage Award from the NFFC Disneyana Fan Club at their convention in Anaheim, California, just around the corner from Disneyland. To be given a prize for having had the golden opportunity to write a book about Walt Disney and later host and co-produce the Walt Disney Treasures DVDs is icing on an already-spectacular cake. But I wasn’t going to turn it down, especially when it was presented to me by Richard Sherman, of the songwriting Sherman Brothers. Little did I dream, when I first saw Mary Poppins at Radio City Music Hall, that I would some day be on a first-name basis with the man who helped bring that movie to life.

Richard M. Sherman chats with yours truly at the NFFC luncheon.

Incidentally, the award itself is beautiful, and I couldn’t be more delighted to show it off. If you’d like to learn more about the NFFC—the National Film Fantasy Club—I encourage you to go to www.nffc.org. They have branches around the country, regional get-togethers, and special events all year long.
