Illness has kept me from attending a number of recent
screenings, which is why I haven’t been able to post reviews of such major
films as Pitch Perfect 2, Aloha, and San Andreas (not that I was anxious to
see the latter, as I live in earthquake country). The same ailment that has
confined me to my house kept me from attending this weekend’s San Francisco
Silent Film Festival, normally a highlight of the year for my wife and me.
Fortunately, I caught early screenings of Spy and Testament of Youth, which open on Friday, so I’ll be able to catch
up a bit.
I have been felled by a mysterious stomach virus, and while
it isn’t life-threatening it certainly puts a lid on most activities—and makes
it hard to stay focused when I’m awake. My doctor is hopeful that we’ll have a
solution this week. In the meantime, I’ve written several columns that I hope
you’ll enjoy; they aren’t time-sensitive but I’ve been wanting to cover these
subjects for a while. I hope you enjoy reading them, and I thank you for your
patience with my absent reviews.
